Waste collection
Waste policy in Almere focuses on separating waste at source. The municipality has several resources and facilities for this purpose.
1. Door-to-door collection and containers
- Most households in Almere have four waste containers at home:
- A grey container for residual waste and PMD (plastic packaging, metal packaging and drink cartons).
- A green container for vegetable, fruit and garden (VGF) waste.
- A blue container for waste paper and cardboard.
- Sometimes also a container for textiles, but this is also collected via neighbourhood containers.
- The municipality had an exchange campaign where the old duo containers were replaced by separate containers with a chip. This chip allows the municipality to keep track of the containers and optimise collection routes.
- The municipality recommends compressing PMD containers to create more space in the container.
2. Underground containers
- In neighbourhoods with high-rise buildings, underground containers are used for residual waste, VGF, paper/cardboard and PMD.
- These containers are accessible with a special waste pass, which you can request from the municipality.
3. Collection dates and the Almere Afval app
- The collection dates can be found in the waste calendar distributed annually by the municipality.
- The municipality of Almere strongly recommends the Almere Afval-app. In this app you will find:
- The current collection days for your address.
- A reminder function so that you are notified when you need to take which container to the road.
- A waste separation guide to help you decide which waste belongs in which container.
- The locations of underground containers and recycling platforms.
4. Recycling platforms and bulky waste
- There are various recycling platforms in Almere where you can hand in different types of waste free of charge, such as batteries, asbestos (in special bags), car tyres, construction and demolition waste and more.
- Bulky waste (waste too large or heavy for regular collection) is collected on demand. You need to contact the municipality to make an appointment for this.
5. Enforcement
- The municipality of Almere actively monitors the proper separation of waste, especially VGF waste. If you don't separate waste properly, you can receive a yellow or red card, with a fine of €100 in the end.
